Mesothelioma is categorized by the location of the tumor
and the type of cells that compose it. The most common location where
mesothelioma cancer forms is in the lining of the lungs, called the
pleura, and is known as pleural mesothelioma. Other locations include
the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma), the lining
of the heart (pericardial mesothelioma), and the lining of the testes
(testicular mesothelioma).
Pleural mesothelioma accounts for 75 percent of cases, and peritoneal
mesothelioma accounts for approximately 20 percent. Pericardial and
testicular mesotheliomas both represent about 1 percent of cases.
Pathologists examine biopsy samples of the tumor(s) under a microscope to determine the mesothelioma cell type.
The most common cell type is epithelial, which also has the best
prognosis. Other cell types include sarcomatoid and biphasic.
